    Welcome to the fourth edition of the Middle East Journal of TEFL. Over the past weeks we have been undertaking extensive teacher professional development in the field of English teaching in South East Asia, Japan and Korea. One of the themes that kept raising its head was the issue of culture underpinning English second language studies and the dichotomy of opinions ranging from the extensive effect culture plays in the classroom to the opposite view that culture does not play any role in language teaching. Do we or do we not incorporate English-culture learning into English-language learning by considering the perspectives of EFL learners?

    Welcome to the second edition of the Middle East Journal of TEFL. In this edition, we present 3 research articles and one opinion piece discussing the current and future state of the profession.  The op-ed suggests that academia is now so overwhelmed by satisfying demands from global commercial Indexing companies, that the purpose of writing and undertaking research, namely global dissemination of vital new research, has now fallen second fiddle to the need be published to secure one’s tenure or promotion.
